Jakarta 6 July 2011 – The Minister of Trade of the Republic of Indonesia, Dr. Mari Pangestu, announced today that the ASEAN Regional Entrepreneurship Summit (RES) will occur at the Grand Hyatt Hotel, Denpassar, Bali, July 22 to 24.  The RES is the first regional follow-on to Entrepreneurship Summit hosted by U.S. President Barack Obama in Washington DC in April, 2010.  Indonesia sent the second largest delegation among the 55 countries to President Obama’s Summit and committed to hold a follow on Summit to continue the dialogue around the importance of entrepreneurship in creating jobs, promoting innovation, and driving economic growth.

Dr. Pangestu announced that U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton will address the Summit.  In addition, a keynote address will be offered by Dr. Eric E. Schmidt, Executive Chairman of Google Inc.

The Summit is expected to host over 200 delegates throughout ASEAN as well as India and China.  It is timed to occur concurrently with the ASEAN Regional Foreign Ministers Meeting, also in Denpassar, Bali.  The Summit will follow the U.S. Department of State-led Entrepreneurship Delegation to Indonesia where 13 leading American entrepreneurs and early-stage investors will meet with over one hundred of Indonesia’s best start-up teams.  The Summit is being organized on behalf of the Government of Indonesia by the Global Entrepreneurship Program Indonesia (GEPI) in collaboration with Global Entrepreneurship Program (GEP) of the U.S. State Department. GEPI is also host for the Entrepreneurship Delegation.

The Regional Entrepreneurship Summit will present prominent local and international speakers along with high level participants from the United States, ASEAN countries, India and China. Minister Pangestu said that “the Summit aims to catalyze the entrepreneurship agenda in Indonesia and connect Indonesia’s rapidly growing startup community with major investors and entrepreneurship networks in the United States and Asia.”  She added that it was “an honor for Indonesia to be the first country to host the continuation of the conversation following President Obama’s hosted historic Summit on Entrepreneurship held in Washington DC in April 2010 and to be able to welcome Secretary Clinton to Indonesia for this purpose.”

Commenting on the presence of Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt, Chris Kanter, Chairman of GEPI said, “We are very happy to have Dr. Schmidt, Executive Chairman of Google Inc., come to keynote the RES.  Google is one of the world’s leading examples of the power of successful entrepreneurship. Google is a company that is young in an industry that didn’t even exist 20 years ago.  It is now the largest company in one of the largest and most important industries in the world.  This is perhaps the best example of the power and promise of entrepreneurship. Having Dr. Schmidt come to Indonesia to spread this message is a telling sign of the importance of our country and this region as an emerging hub of entrepreneurship.”

According to Steven Koltai, Senior Advisor, Entrepreneurship at the U.S. Department of State, “Indonesia is one of the key countries of focus for The Global Entrepreneurship Program because we see it as a prime example of an emerging country that is about to take off, in large part through the power of entrepreneurship.  We are happy to be helping Global Entrepreneurship Program Indonesia get up and running, as what we expect will be one of the drivers of a growing entrepreneurial culture in Indonesia.”    The RES follows on the heels of the GEP Entrepreneurship Delegation, which will take place July 19-22, 2011 in Jakarta. The finalist for best tech and non-tech early stage and growth stage companies from the delegation’s Showcase of Indonesia’s Entrepreneurs will be announced in a nationally televised Finale ceremony on July 22, 2011 in Bali.  This Finale Ceremony is also the kick-off to the RES.

Dr. Eric E. Schmidt is the Executive Chairman of Google. He served as CEO of Google from 2001 – 2011, and previously as chairman and CEO of Novell and chief technology officer at Sun Microsystems. He is a member of the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology and the Prime Minister’s Advisory Council in the U.K.
