Presentation is one of several ways business people do to gain new clients, consumers or investor. You could win the heart of potential client, consumer or investor if you can present well. The biggest challenges in presenting is the communication technique so that the message can be conveyed to the presentee. Supporting aspects such as body language, stage performance, voice intonation and also how to deliver the presentation itself.

Sumartok from Presentonomics and Lex dePraxis from Hitman System gave presenting knowledges in the “Presentation Idol: Extracting Presentation Techniques” that is held by the #StartupLokal community in Auditorium Mega, TransTV building, South Jakarta.

In this occasion, Sumartok roll out some important points that had to be fulfilled in presenting. They are:

1. Mind the time
Manage time. In pitching, you have to know the amount of time given to you. Timing must be taken into utmost consideration. Investors are very busy people and doesn’t have a lot of time listening to blabbering.

2. Focus, focus, focus
A presenter has to select the most important materials and scrape the unimportant ones. Focus on the essentials.

3. Showing is better than telling
If you tell investors that you have a great product, then show them, because words without proof is a waste of time and energy.

4. Sell, don’t just explain!
Selling something is not enough just by mentioning the form of the product. You have to explain the benefit gain by using your product.

5. Story + execution = valuation
“Story” meant here are narration or flow of story. Storytelling is a good way to take the presentation audiences to the core or main purpose of your presentation. A success story or testimonial in the execution will give a high value to your product from the investors.

6. Convey a clear differentiation
Convey a clear differentiation between your products and the competitors as clear as possible. Make a well defined boundaries and differentiation.

7. 12-20 slides is ideal for 15″ presentation.
For 15 minutes slide, 12-20 slides is suffice.

Beyond the explained points above, Sumartok also explain that you must not forget to explain to the investors about yourself and the team working with you. They need to know your business’ credibility. Explain these but not too long. Besides that, content is king. Make a simple slideshow and keep the audience focus. Avoid a long and complex text and paragraphs. Make a short sentence with images that explain the core of you messages. Ideally, in one slide, don’t use more than two fonts, and if you want to display numbers, you better use Arial font, because this font is very good in displaying numerics.

In the preliminary presentation to the potential investor, you don’t have to extensively describe you business competitor. Competitors are for latter. The most important thing is the solution you offered from your business.

Meanwhile, Lex dePraxis focuses on how to build emotion between the presenter and its audiences. He explain that there are five things you should do to win the hear of the audiences, they are:

1. Facial expression
People will not listen to you if you don’t show any emotion. Show your emotion to the audiences, and avoid any attempt to read the writings written on the slideshow. Presentation is not dictating or reading news. Talk with facial expression. Smile.

2. Eye contact
Create an eye contact to the audiences one by one. Differ this with sweeping your eyes to all of the audiences. Create eye contact personally, so that they felt that their existance is important. This is needed to create an emotion between the two.

3. Repetitions
To repeat what you’ve just said is important. Because if you continuously present in a flowing pattern from beginning to end, people will easily forget.

4. Slow
Use a very slow talking tempo. Don’t haste In presenting, use a slower talking tempo that the average day to day talking tempo Slow talking tempo and do this with eye contacts to the investor will show that you are a credible person. Remember, an investor is interested in a business not because the business is good, but because the person talking is credible and trustworthy. With a slow tempo, you can convey a better emotion. Sometimes emotion is more important that information.

5. Drama & action
An impression of a person happens in 1/10th of a second. In that short time, you have to create an emotional bond with the audience. Emotion creates impression. Presentation is a form of drama or acting. You can’t do this by reading slides. Once you read the slides, your connection and emotion with the audience will snap and loose. You need to talk by presenting yourself fully through body languages, because audiences will be fascinated by your body languages. Beside that, the main purpose of a presention is to build story. That’s why story is important. Story tells, story sells.
